LATE HOURS: Western Canada Tour
An evening of live music and experimental film with Karl Hirzer (piano/synthesizer) and Josué Valdepeñas (cello), featuring the premiere of Braden Dereniwski’s Crystal Clear and Vicki Van Chau’s award-winning In Tandem.
Hirzer and Valdepeñas, prominent figures in the Canadian classical music scene, perform standard works alongside original compositions, blending electronic and acoustic instruments.
Crystal Clear, based on Hirzer and Valdepeñas’ track of the same name, is a gripping music and dance film following a young woman’s visceral journey through her psyche, reflecting on her actions and fate. Directed by Braden Dereniwski, it features performances by Kelsie Vanstone and Ashley Mae Johnston, with choreography by Yukichi Hattori.
In Tandem, inspired by Hirzer's track Daphne and Desmond from his new album Relaxer Distractor, is a Super 8 short film by Vicki Van Chau. A love letter to the spaces between two cities, it captures Hirzer’s sources of inspiration, nostalgia, and the feeling of home.
