Portraits: Facing the Image at AGA

What does a portrait mean to you?

For the past two years, the only image facing many of us was in the mirror. Alberta artists were asked to reflect on what facing the image means to them in the context of the portrait. Portraiture as a genre has been around for millennium. It is generally a recording of an individual’s appearance and personality, but it can also include the psychological. In contemporary art, the portrait often contains a context, identifies questions, and targets social issues. Self-portrait or not, the portrait often reveals something about the artist’s self and the age in which they live.

This travelling exhibition is organized by the Alberta Society of Artists and features the works of Alberta artists. It will be on display in the Art Gallery of Alberta’s Community Gallery from June 25 – August 21, 2022.
