The Sharks Surf Club and instructors Jonathan “Jono” Kusyanto and Kris Yap-Chung, offer lessons to anyone who aspires to hang ten, as long as you’re 10+. Or if you’ve been surfing a time or two before, take a lesson to hone your skills (and your abs, pecs and glutes).
Remember back when your parents used to feed you lunch and then force you to take an hour-long swimming pool hiatus? Guess what? It’s a myth! If you still have doubts, take faith in this: the Waterpark’s snack shacks – Coconut Grove, Beachview Snacks and the Hot Dog Hut – don’t offer multi-course meals on their menus. They keep it simple and scrumptious, with fare that includes burgs, nachos and hot dogs. You know, energy foods.
When you think of the world’s hottest surf destinations, where does your mind go? To Australia’s 35,000 km of coastline? To Southern California, home of Malibu and other classic surf breaks? Or does it go to the heart of Alberta’s windswept prairies? Most people know Edmonton as home to West Edmonton Mall (WEM), North America’s biggest shopping mall. What you may not know is that WEM houses one of the world’s most unique indoor surf destinations – The World Waterpark!
Rain, shine or full-on blizzard, surf conditions at WEM are ideal, er bodacious, at a tropical +31°C with four foot waves. Plus, no sharks!
If you’re looking for thrills, you’ll find no shortage here, with more than 17 waterslides and play features – from a kids’ spray park to ziplining to the new Cyclone waterslide, which sends its riders plummeting 17 hair-raising metres at 60 km/hour. After all that adrenaline-pumping action, you might just want to float lazily in an inner tube. You’ll find those here too.
West Edmonton Mall is home to over 800 shops and services, including swimwear stores that come complete with “fit experts” to help you find the right styles to fit your shape, size and budget.
