Summer is the perfect time to take a trip down patio lane. Come one, come all and join us on this epic Edmonton odyssey! Follow our hit-list to guide you through those long, hot summer nights… you’re never alone with a cold drink in your hand!

Keep it Downtown

Riverside Bistro at the Courtyard by Marriott

The Courtyard by Marriott is neighbours with Fairmont Hotel Macdonald, and you know what that means – awesome views! The Riverside Bistro is the perfect place to watch all the bikers, rollerbladers (wait, do people still rollerblade?), and joggers.
Must Try: Classic Margarita

Fairmont Hotel Macdonald

The North Saskatchewan River Valley is the crown jewel of Alberta’s capital – and the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald has front row seats. Grab a cocktail and take in everything from the Muttart Conservatory’s pyramids piercing the skyline, to the Segway riders cruising through the trails just down below.
Must Try: The Mac’s Sensational Iced Tea

The Common

The Common has found a great balance between a classy club and a chill pub, with a cozy patio to match. Usually toting great happy hour deals, not to mention the legendary Hip Hop Brunch days, this is a good choice if you just can't decide what type of mood you're in. Plus their patio is adorably enclosed with hanging shrubbery and soft glow hanging lights - you'll almost forget you're sitting right next to 109th street.
Must Try: Ginger Snap Mojito + Steak Poutine

Central Social Hall

If drinks for $2.75 during happy hour hasn't got your attention, then what are you doing reading this blog? Just kidding. Central Social Hall has the perfect patio for post-run drinks. This spot has also undergone some major renovations recently and now holds two good sized patios. Both are well sheltered and have umbrellas-a-plenty—perfect for those lazy summer days.
Must Try: The London Cocktail

Violino

Step into a floral oasis tucked away from the hustle and bustle of 124 Street at Violino. The Italian restaurant occupies a 1913 mansion and offers two verandas - one on the main floor and one on the second floor - that are arguably the nicest patios in the city. Grab lunch with friends, or settle in for a romantic evening with your significant other, and share a freshly made pizza, which comes straight from the wood fire oven that sits on the patio.
Must Try: Aragosta Risotto

Parlour

Pizza and Peroni on the patio? Yes please! Parlour’s courtyard is the perfect place to enjoy a pint or prosecco while snacking on a modern take on classic Italian favourites like pasta and pizza.
Must Try: Keep it simple with The Queen, Parlour’s take on the classic Margherita pizza.

Venture over to Whyte Avenue

O2’s on Whyte

Looking for another one of Edmonton’s best rooftop patios? You may have found it at O2’s, where you get to sit perched above Whyte Avenue while you crush margaritas. Don’t act like you don’t love margaritas like the rest of us.
Must Try: Margaritas. Weren’t you listening?

The Pint

Another Edmontonian favourite, The Pint is a great place during the winter to watch the Oilers blow another lead. But during the summer, The Pint opens the floodgates to its massive street-side patio, and the tears of another year without playoffs are long forgotten. Grab a table and you’ll have a front row seat to some prime people-watching on Jasper or Whyte Ave.
Must Try: Wings - all 40 flavours

El Cortez & Have Mercy

What’s better than a patio? Three patios, that’s what. El Cortez has a backyard fit for a Mexican fiesta on the ground level, equipped with funky, bright patterned cushions and jugs of Sangria aplenty. Chase the blues away on Margarita Monday’s while you people watch on the Front Patio or chill out on the back balcony, attached to Have Mercy - a great spot to catch some street performer action with a beer in hand during The International Fringe Festival.
Must Try: Churros with warm caramel sauce

Cafe Mosaics

Another "small but mighty" choice with an artistic twist. Usually, Cafe Mosaics patio only hosts a few tables, but last year this vegan cafe built out a geometric seating area just off of the sidewalk, making for a very stylish hangout.
Must Try: Happy Cow Stir Fry

Empress Ale House

Want to sip like a local? Then get on this tried-and-true local favourite. The Empress patio can be hard to get a seat on during a hot summer's day, but try you must! Sometimes there's even a little bit of live local music to pair with your pint.
Must Try: Any local beer on tap

MKT

MKT has an enormous patio so you can really soak up the sun. With dozens of beers on tap (60 to be exact) and even more in bottles (also 60), MKT is a beer and patio lover’s paradise. It’s in a pretty handy location too, right in the heart of Old Strathcona.
Must Try: Dragon’s Breath Mojito

Under the High Wheel

Comfort food, you say? Under the High Wheel will put you right at home with its homey feel and deliciously modern favourites. From bangers n’ mash to sweet Belgian waffles, this might be your new “go to” if you haven’t been. It also has one of Edmonton’s neatest patios just off of Whyte Ave. Just because it feels like home, doesn’t mean you can wear your mustard-stained sweats, however.
Must Try: Chocolate and Hazelnut Crepe

Black Dog

Overlooking Whyte Avenue, the garden patio atop the Black Dog is a casual, unassuming place to dive into a barley sandwich. The aptly named Wooftop patio (get it?) is a local favourite and a great place to enjoy a brew on a sizzling summer day.
Must Try: pretty well any beer should do it.

Soak up the Sun in Garneau

Leva Cappuccino Bar

Leva has one of the most beautiful patios in Edmonton, and some of the best espresso too. Tucked away on a Garneau street near Whyte Avenue and guarded by giant neighbourhood trees, Leva’s Italian flavour will linger with you long after you've left. Chow down on one of their phenomenal pizzas, or sip a glass of wine with a cheese platter.
Must Try: The Prosciutto Crudo Pizza

Café Bicyclette

Do you speak French? No? Okay. Do you like French food though? Good, because that’s all you need to enjoy Café Bicyclette. Situated in the French Quarter and specializing in French-country fare, Café Bicyclette is a pretty awesome place to visit on a bike ride. Bonus: this authentic and casual French bistro has an amazing patio. So amazing that they even keep it open during the winter.
Must Try: Poutine Classic

Bodega Highlands

Hit the Highlands this summer and you’ll be as hooked as we are on all things Bodega. Tapas are all about sharing, so we want to give you the gift of knowing that there is perfect sangria waiting for you in the quiet, tree-lined streets of the Highlands.
Must Try: Piri Piri Prawns

Biera

Nestled in a residential area just south of Whyte Avenue, this hip gastropub has the perfect summer patio. With string lights that sparkle in the night and a cozy atmosphere, Biera is a great place to hang with friends, share a few dishes, and taste the brews made in-house by Blind Enthusiasm Brewing.
Must Try: Sunflower Seed & Rye Risotto
