Celebrating Black Futures Month with Amal Mohamud
Explore Edmonton acknowledges those who came here as settlers – as migrants either in this generation or in generations past – and those of who came here involuntarily, particularly those brought to these lands as a result of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and Slavery. Explore Edmonton would like to pay tribute to those ancestors of African origin and descent, and acknowledge their contributions towards building Edmonton as a vibrant, inclusive. and diverse community.
Meet Amal Mohamud
Amal Mohamud, a talented journalist and producer from Edmonton, is making waves as a first-generation Somali Canadian in the Canadian media scene. She has worked with various outlets like OMNI Alberta, AMI Accessible Media, CBC Edmonton Creator Network, City News Edmonton, Muslim Kids TV, CTV News Edmonton, and even Al Jazeera Arabic.
Beyond her career achievements, Amal is known for her love of multiculturalism and diversity. She actively promotes unity through media, highlighting her commitment to inclusivity. Outside of work, she finds happiness in exploring different cultures through travel, enjoying diverse cuisines, and savoring the art of storytelling in movies. Amal's journey exemplifies her dedication to breaking barriers and fostering a more inclusive and globally aware media landscape.

5 Artists 1 Love is one of the city's longest running Black Histories and Futures Month celebrations that honours the creative vibrancy within Edmonton’s Black communities, featuring some amazing events. Catch Joyful Noise: A Musical Showcase at Winspear Centre on February 3, and visit the Art Gallery of Alberta to discover the 5 Artists 1 Love Art Exhibition from January 20 - March 3.
When African Women Talk
Join "When African Women Talk" for their Black History Month Gala on Februrary 10! It's a celebration of Black excellence, resilience, and all-around awesomeness. The evening will be filled with inspiring speakers, captivating performances, and chances for networking and community building.
