2022 L'Étape Edmonton

For the first time ever, Edmonton welcomed L’Étape by Tour de France on August 14, 2022. L’Étape Canada by Tour de France is one of 21 worldwide amateur cycling events created to make participants feel like a true champion. We are proud to have hosted the only Canadian stop on the tour. From Paris to the prairies, 808 cyclists raced through Edmonton's scenic streets and participated in this thrilling cycling event without needing to take the flight to France.

Open to all cyclists—from challengers to kids and casual riders—this iconic event was Edmonton's chance to experience hosting the Tour de France, with the winner even receiving an official Yellow Jersey! Beginner bikers and professional pedallers were given the choice of 160 kilometre, 80 kilometre, or 40 kilometre distances for their race. Families could also get involved with the Family Ride and Kids Race.

To start off the race, cyclists participated in a real Village Départ: the legendary gathering point for all people involved in the Tour de France. Starting in Edmonton's West end, racers had the chance to meet up with Tour heroes and check out brands displaying their newest bicycles and latest gadgets, with experts giving out tips for even more cycling fun. There was also a Tour de France fan expo, an authentic Tour de France Museum, workshops, demonstrations, competitions, and tastings of the latest in sports nutrition.

Explore Edmonton's Sport & Culture team worked side-by-side with MB Events on all marketing activations, provided contacts and services for a successful event, and helped streamline the event planning process. Overall, the event generated a total economic impact of $1.5 million.
