2022 FIFA Qualifiers
In November 2021, Edmonton proudly hosted two FIFA World Cup Qualifying matches at Commonwealth Stadium, where teams competed for a spot in the 2022 FIFA World Cup™ in Qatar. These matches not only showcased top-tier soccer but also highlighted Edmonton’s capacity to host large-scale international events.
On November 12, 2021, Canada Soccer's Men's National Team faced off against Costa Rica. The stadium was buzzing with energy as Canadian fans cheered for their team, particularly supporting Edmonton-raised Alphonso Davies, who played his first professional match in his hometown. Ultimately Canada defeated Costa Rica with a final score of 1-0, bringing them one step closer to qualifying. Soccer fans continued to show up to support Canada, packing Commonwealth Stadium a second time on November 16, 2021. Despite snow and sub-zero temperatures, Canada Soccer's Men's National Team brought the heat, defeating Mexico 2-1.
The two matches attracted an impressive 93,018 spectators and generated $32 million in total economic impact, benefiting local businesses and reinforcing Edmonton’s reputation as a vibrant hub for major sporting events, no matter the season.
