OUR ROOTS IN WOMEN’S SPORTS RUN DEEP

The Edmonton Grads (1915–40)
The Edmonton Grads were an iconic women's championship basketball team led by the legendary coach Percy Page. Throughout their 25-year journey, the Grads achieved an astonishing 95% victory rate, which eventually landed them a spot in the Canada Sports Hall of Fame!
Their unparalleled success included a 17-year winning streak (1923 to 1940) of the Underwood International Trophy (USA–Canada) and an undefeated record in 24 matches held during the Olympic Summer Games of 1924, 1928, and 1936.

Canada Women's National Basketball Team
In 2013, Edmonton was designated as the home of the Canadian Women's Basketball Team. Edmonton has proudly hosted the 2022, 2023, and 2024 FIBA 3x3 Women's Series, with our local Katherine and Michelle Plouffe representing Canada amidst a roaring local fan base.

Volleyball Canada's National Sitting Team
Since 2013, Edmonton has been a pillar of support for Volleyball Canada's Women's National Sitting team. The team is tirelessly training and journeying across the globe, recently securing a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

FIFA 2015 Women's World Cup™️️
The 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup™️️ marked the first time the tournament was hosted by Canada. Matches were played in six cities across Canada in five time zones. In an electrifying opening match, history was made at Commonwealth Stadium. Christine Sinclair’s dramatic penalty kick in the second minute of second-half stoppage time secured a thrilling 1-0 victory for Canada over China, witnessed by a roaring sellout crowd. This momentous occasion further ignited Edmonton’s love for soccer and reaffirmed our commitment to creating an equal playing field for all athletes.

2023 FIVB Volleyball Beach Pro Tour Challenge
In 2023, the city proudly hosted the 2023 FIVB Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Challenge in the centre of the city in Edmonton’s ICE District! From July 21 – July 23, 2023, Edmonton’s downtown transformed into a beach as volleyball athletes from around the world came to compete in the sand.

2024 WNBA Pre Season Game
On May 5, 2024, the WNBA played on Canadian soil for the second time ever. Edmonton is proud to have hosted the Los Angelos Sparks vs. Seattle Storm WNBA Pre Season Game at Rogers Place. World-class athletes showcased their talent to a roaring crowd of Canadians cheering them on.

2025 PWHL Takeover Tour™
Edmonton welcomed one of the nine neutral-site regular-season games in the PWHL Takeover Tour™️to Rogers Place on February 16, 2025. As Toronto Sceptres and Ottawa Charge took the ice, a sold-out crowd proudly showed their support for women's sport—showing up and cheering loudly for the duration of the game.
