Reconnect with your inner child for a five day immersion into music, magic, theatre, circus, puppetry and just plain fun during the Northern Alberta International Children’s Festival.
Follow the laughter and toe-tapping music to the lively carnival that transforms the banks of the Sturgeon River in downtown St. Albert when more than 55,000 kids of all ages come out to play. Every May professional artists from across the country and around the world create a buzz with more than 100 stage performances. Street buskers surprise with sidewalk acts from mesmerizing mime to zany acrobatics. When youngsters are tackling Métis weaving, joining in a buffalo hunt or focused on story-telling they don’t even realize they’re learning about Aboriginal heritage: when they’re whirling to Francophone reels and making traditional music with two wooden spoons they’re absorbing French Canadian culture. For three decades an army of enthusiastic volunteers has been staging this festival that aims to kindle kids’ curiosity and awareness of performing, literary and visual arts around them. And with free face painting, airbrush tattooing, racing mini solar-powered cars, and hip hop and urban street dance, it’s one great big playground as well!
