Fashion stylist, Janis Galloway, has put together a list of high-end brands in Edmonton and where you can find them. Janis is the go-to fashion expert in the city and leads the Publicity Room, Alberta's only PR agency specializing in fashion and lifestyle brands.
On a recent trip to New York City, I walked the buzzing streets of Manhattan, watching shoppers zig and zag out of shops, arms heavy with name-brand fashion loot. But as I walked each block, the scene was like a déjà vu, I’d seen all these stores before.
Known mostly for our hockey greats and river valley, Edmonton’s high-end shopping offerings often go without glory. But dare I say we’re on par with some of the world’s biggest shopping meccas? In terms of big brands, we’ve got it all – Holt Renfrew, Coach, Kate Spade, Lacoste – and the list of our high-end stores goes on.
Cue the image of Audrey Hepburn eating her croissant staring longingly through the store window in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Tiffany & Co. is one of the world’s oldest and most renowned jewelry stores, established in 1837. The coveted blue box is the ultimate symbol of luxury, the store itself a beautiful sparkling cove, with the friendliest and most knowledgeable in customer service. The VIP experience extended to every customer at Tiffany’s attracts Canadians from east to west, who make special trips to the West Edmonton Mall location to purchase the finest and most recognizable jewelry in the world.
This Edmonton-owned designer shop is nestled into the heart of Downtown neighbouring high-end stores like Holt Renfrew and Escada. Coup is my favourite stop to find it-girl brands from all over the world, carefully curated by owner Anna McDonough, whose own effortless style is an inspiration. Amongst the racks you’ll find refined, but edgy labels such as A.L.C., 3.1 Phillip Lim and Jenni Kayne while discovering tons of other cool brands. My Achilles heel always finds its way into their epic Senso footwear selection.
Edmonton is the home to Alberta’s only freestanding DKNY store. The chic, bright and minimalist location carries women’s wear, accessories and handbags. The label is inspired by New York City street style – racks of black and white pieces easy to mix and match, practical footwear and chic layering pieces. My favourite offering from the brand is the sophisticated collection of high quality handbags. I love DKNY bags and wallets for their clean lines, perfect sizes and smooth zippers.
Edmonton gets bragging rights as the first Simons locale outside of Quebec borders. The famed Canadian, family-run department store is at the top of my list to shop high and low in one spot. If you cruise the designer section at the right time, you can find incredible deals on brands like Chloe, Moschino, Elizabeth and Charles and more. The men’s department is also a godsend – a huge designer selection offers the best men’s brands including DSquared, Ted Baker, and Raf Simons. Hot tip: the tailoring department upstairs is speedy and skilled – you can get your pants hemmed in 30 minutes or less.
Canada has only a few Kate Spade stores and Edmonton is lucky to have one in West Edmonton Mall. The ultra feminine brand known for vibrant hues and graphic patterns also has an expanding lifestyle line of stationary, housewares and accessories. I’m personally obsessed with the label’s pens, notebooks and bow-shaped paperclips.
