It’s been a long four hours on the highway, the kids have been fighting over elbow space and constantly pestering, “are we there yet?” There is a certain point when we’ve heard those four words for the seventh or eighth time that we start to wonder why we put ourselves through this time after time. Family travel is a funny business, it certainly pushes us to the brink, but it’s the life-lasting memories that make it all worth it in the end. Years from now, you’ll be reminiscing about the adventures you shared during your family travels.
Make Edmonton one of your family travel destinations, we’d love to have you. Here are some authentic experiences to help get your itinerary started.
Make TELUS World of Science the first place on your list and the kids will love you for it. Walk on a giant tongue, gather evidence as a CSI detective, or program a robot – here you can do it all. The interactive activities allow you to have hands-on encounters with a variety of different science demonstrations. Make sure to catch the biggest IMAX® movie experience in Alberta, now with 3-D films and full digital sound. Plus, a new 16,000 square foot gallery allows TELUS World of Science to host some exclusive touring exhibits.
Now that your minds are racing, it’s time to go burn off some energy at one of Edmonton’s newest attractions, Launchpad Trampoline Park. At Launchpad you can literally bounce off the walls, play trampoline dodgeball or practice back flips into a giant foam pit. If you haven’t had your fill of action yet, release a little family tension at Laser Quest.
Visit the Edmonton Valley Zoo for a chance to see more than 350 animals including snow leopards, monkeys, red pandas, and zebras. Check out the new Polar Extremes exhibit for an up-close view of seals, sea lions and arctic foxes. Roving interpreters offer daily demonstrations, programs and talks.
For some good old-fashioned family fun, journey out to Prairie Gardens Adventure Farm offering over 50 exciting activities. Navigate your way through a corn maze, pick your own vegetables in the U-Pick patch, and sift for gemstones beneath a waterfall.
Want to travel back in time? Head 30 minutes outside of Edmonton to experience the story of Ukrainian settlement in Alberta with costumed role-players and more than 30 historical buildings at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village. Or walk among life-size, startlingly realistic dinosaurs at Jurassic Forest, a 40-acre prehistoric park.
No trip to Edmonton is complete without a visit to West Edmonton Mall. Here you can surf on a tidal wave, race down a giant water slide, ride a triple-loop roller coaster, enjoy a sea lion show, climb aboard a pirate ship, soar from the world’s largest indoor zipline and so much more!
Throughout the year, Edmonton hosts an array of colourful and entertaining festivals that are perfect for families. Local favourites include: the International Street Performers Festival, International Children’s Festival, Silver Skate Festival, Ice on Whyte and the Heritage Festival.
Here’s to building sometimes challenging, but always authentic family memories!
