February might be a short month, but there's no shortage of things going on in Edmonton. Here's what's on tap for February:
Flying Canoë Volant
Canoeing in the winter is tough. There’s constantly ice in your way, and the obvious threat of hypothermia. Fortunately, the Flying Canoe Festival has resolved that problem with, well, flying. Take part in the French-Canadian and First-Nations legend told by various lost canoeists along a beautifully lit trail. Of course you can also check out the outdoor DJ, snow slide and ice bar as well.
Dead Cold Run and Hypothermic ½ Marathons
Here come the zombies. Yes I know, you’ve trained your whole life for this moment. You’ve gone through all the hypotheticals–where would you go, who would you bring, what would be your weapon of choice–now it’s time. Your last training test for the zombie apocalypse is here with the Dead Cold Run!
If you need to limber up before or after your zombie training program, might we recommend the Hypothermic Half Marathons? Test out your winter wheels at the races, two weeks apart.

Silver Skate Festival
How about a little fire and ice to go with your February? Silver Skate Festival is serving up a healthy dose of both with an event list that would make the Winter Olympics jealous! Want snow sculptures? Got ‘em. Fire sculptures? Yep. Winter triathlon? Sure. Skating races, snow shoe races, curling, snow luge, broomball, hockey…should I keep going? The list goes on with other highlights including Heritage Village and Folk Trails. You’ll have to check it out to see the winter spirit truly coming together!
And you simply have to stop by the Ice Castles taking over Hawrelak Park!
What’s a loppet? Hmm, that’s a good question, let me turn it over to our resident Viking blogger, Yngvild. A loppet is a long endurance race (typically cross country skiing), such as the Canadian Birkebeiner Ski Festival this February. The “Birkie” is a great family-oriented event that takes place at Cooking Lake near Elk Island National Park. Terrific, thanks Yngvild!
Lunar New Year and Chinatown Celebration
You may think the festivities ended on December 31st, but think again! You can celebrate another new year in Edmonton at the Lunar New Year Celebration. There will be a parade starting at noon and tons of activities filling Chinatown for the day. You can't miss this one.
Valentine’s Day seems to sneak up every single year doesn’t it? Forgot to make plans again? Of course you did, the doghouse is like a second home to you. But this year is different, you can try Valentine's Day Paintballing, the Valentine's Day Disco Skate and more!
Family Day Fun
Need a reason to get out of the house with the fam jam? Well, the long weekend is coming, and the Alberta Legislature has you covered! Outside you’ll find cabane à sucre, horse-drawn wagon rides, skating and roving entertainment. Inside, check out the scavenger hunt, Legozone, photowall, or even the illusionist! If that's not enough, there's also family activities at Churchill Square and City Hall!
February kicks off with a couple new shows in town. The Last Resort is playing at the Mayfield Dinner Theatre and will bring an evening full of surprises and laughs. If you prefer dance watch the Alberta Ballet's Dynamic Directions, from February 11-13, for a thrilling show of contemporary and neo-classical ballet. The Wizard of Oz also makes it's way to the Jubilee starting February 23. Don’t miss them before they’re gone!
Sip and Slide Sundays
Winter beckons once again and a fresh batch of snow will let your toboggan rocket down Edmonton ski hills. This February however, you get the added treat of hot chocolate at the bottom of select Edmonton toboggan hills. Click here for the list.
